Dr Henriette van Ruiten is a clinical research associate at John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre, Newcastle University. Her areas of expertise include pediatric neurology and neuromuscular disease. These are conditions which cause progressive weakness and wasting of all muscles leading to significant disability and often a shortened life.

Dr van Ruiten is passionate about speeding up the diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders as an early diagnosis allows early access to care standards and new treatments, which greatly improve outcome. She has developed a new RCPCH eLearning module (and accompanying free workshops) to help spot abnormal motor development in babies and children, often a first sign of a neuromuscular disease.
