Light it Up Green for Muscular Dystrophy, also known as “Light It Up Green” and “#LIUG4MD” was established in Palm Beach County, Florida on May 14, 2014, by Nadine Kirby, mother of a son with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, in order to promote awareness of the 9 types of muscular dystrophies and 43 related neuromuscular diseases which affect both children and adults. Patients often succumb to their illness in early childhood or as young adults depending upon the diagnosis. Public awareness of these disorders brings them to the forefront for research funding in search of lifesaving cures and treatments.

The Light It Up Green mission is to obtain state proclamations, as well as a national proclamation from the President of the United States, establishing the month of August as Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month. Additionally, the campaign goal is to ‘shine a light’ and raise awareness by lighting state capitol buildings or city and state landmarks lime green throughout the US as well as internationally (happening 2018) each August while maintaining a community presence throughout the year via internet/social media, advocacy and fundraising for The Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Here is the story of why Nadine Kirby, whose son David lives with DMD, created LIUG4MD.
