Adrenal Suppression From Long Term Use of Steroid in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)
source: NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde
summary/abstract:Doctors and nurses prescribe steroid medicines for boys with DMD as they have been shown to improve muscle strength. Steroid medicines can also protect the heart and lungs and reduce the chances of developing a curved spine (scoliosis).
There are two Types of Steroids Prescribed in DMD:
• Prednisolone
• Deflazacort
However, whilst steroid medicines are very useful in DMD, there can be side effects. One of the side effects when steroid medicines have been used for a long period of time (more than 6 months) is that they cause the adrenal glands to be “sleepy” (adrenal suppression).
